Why I do what I do

Sun Dec 13, 2009, 7:09 AM
Computers:

I started playing around with computers a longggg time ago. I used to play games on a 486 when I was small. An old Compaq. My stepdad has always worked on computers, it wasnt until after a few years, I started to catch on and follow along. I was that little guy that was interested in geeky stuff. I played on my stepdad and my Dad's computers at work, until finally I begged and begged for a computer. My stepdad bought me a laptop in the 5th grade, a Dell Latitude. That was a life changing moment, I wouldnt be who I'm with right now if he didnt do that, I wouldnt know the same people, I cant even imagine what thats like. I used that laptop, surprisingly for 4 years, without needing a recovery disc. The Dell ended up saying goodbye off the side of a bed, guess thats better then a bsod right? Then you know its broken and you dont even *try* to fix it. And basically from then on, I experimented with computers, Windows, OS X, Linux, all sorts of stuff, just like tweaking things, messing with things, and playing games. I dont have much time anymore, but I used to <3 playing games on computer.

Music:

My Dad gave me my first instrument in the 4th grade. He bought me an Ibanez GSR200 for Christmas, and my mother bought me an amp and a stand. At first my hands werent big enough to play really, I could mess around, but nothing really came out that great sounding, was just amazing holding an instrument for the first time. This was a big point in my life, cause I'd watched my Dad's band play alot, and I always wanted to be like them, so I could play now that I had it, but oops wait, Ian, hands are too small still ;) So after a few years of jealously staring at my Dad's band, I started to pickup again. I started learning how to play again, I learned basic songs, then got more complex, then played without looking, all that great stuff. Little did my Dad know that he would buy me a bass at the age of 10 and that I'd be sitting here at 19 playing Les Claypools stuff on the bass and stuff like that, all the classic rock songs too. He was very proud of me for that, he taught me how to play bass by playing a song called "Green Onions". I learned slowly but surely, (I still think hes a better guitarist then me even though hes a drummer mainly too). Its hard to be around my Dad and not be a musician, I dont think anyone would be able to stand it really, he has 13,000 albums last time we counted. So you better like music if you are living there! Anyways, I fell in love with tempo and beat and rhythm. And from then on, decided I needed to control that, and what better way then making the music yourself.

Photography:

Ever since early in my life, like most families, we have a photo album. I've always liked funny or weird things, scary things or conspiracy type things. So when I was young, and I found out that you could actually Capture something onto film, I found that astonishing. So I had to try for myself. I remember hitting 7th grade, and I got a Pentax Optio S40, I thought it was awesome, took a ton of pics, but didnt really think twice. Then every year I kind of upgraded, next was the Pentax Optio S50 I believe, 5 megapixels. Then onto the Konica Minolta which was 6 megapixels, and was one of my FAVORITE point and shoots ever! along with another camera after that, it was a Kodak V603, amazing camera, beautiful camera, and very small and durable. Then I made the mistake of upgrading to a Pentax T20, because it was a touch screen and that was "cool", after I learned that that was the worst purchase I ever made, I kind of gave up on photography for a while. Waited it out, then bought a Canon 500D with a case and a memory card, cost me a pretty penny. And here I am now, trying to get my quality prints out for all to see :)

A little about life and people around me

Sun Dec 13, 2009, 6:00 AM
Lemme start this out like this. I was born in Las Vegas, lived there for 7 weeks, then my Mom and Dad moved to Snohomish, WA. Later there was a divorce and they were separated, so I have two step parents. Lets get started.

Mom: Shes awesome, shes artistic, she doesn't care what you think of her, but she will respect you, and she can make you laugh, and oooh and ahhh at her art. Shes very expressive, very smart, very beautiful, and shes amazing. She paints pictures that blow my mind. She has a great outlook on life, its very optimistic, always thinking of the good, the bad is there too, but when you are around my Mom, it all feels good. Shes got some really good energy coming off of her, and she gets along with just about anyone. She likes to teach others when she can, and help others, she does good deeds, and teaches art at our work, shes an amazing artist, I am thankful that she uses her time there, with people who are not so fortunate. Shes got a big heart. just remember, don't mess with her, I'm her bodyguard :P

Dad: Hes awesome too! He's a drummer in a classic rock band, hes 6' 5", and built like a wrestler, hes a very smart man and he knows just about everything you can think of about music. You ask him, who did this song, he goes, oh thats .... in year.... on album..... and .... produced it. He's too musically smart, and hes the best drummer I've ever heard, he's always supported me and been there for me, I didn't see him much through my life, but that will change, once I get on my own feet, everything will balance out a little more. He has always helped me because he always seems to know the best decisions, and hes one of the people I will talk to if I am having any troubles, he can calm it quickly, just looking at the smile on his face, you can see the love in his eyes, and it makes you remember who you are, reminds you how important you are.

Stepdad: He's very relaxed, and hes tall, 6' 1", and hes British, so you better watch out. Hes an amazing man, very sharp, he can think ahead and he can always help you with what you are doing, he opens your mind to the right and wrong ways to do things, he lets you decide what the best choice is, so *you* learn. He's not afraid to tell you if you do something wrong, and he always helps you learn how to do it the right way. He can be very nice, he can wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Nonetheless, hes been a great stepfather and supported me through everything, and I appreciate that. I do not consider my step parents to be any lower then my birth parents. I consider them equal, they are all my parents, just some have stairs for some reason, so strange! hahaha

Kain: This is my Brother, he is freakin awesome. You gotta love him. Sometimes he sleeps a lot, only problem I have with that is that I have insomnia and I *cant* do that. Hes smart, hes going in the right direction, and I see him going somewhere far. I would love to start a band with him, hes a great guitarist and I can play bass to his riffs. Hes always helped me out, always had my back for life, I'd take a bullet for him, and he would for me. This guy pretty much helped make me as much as my parents did. He had authority and was a parental figure through my life, and he did a good job. But, goddamnit, this guy made me have a fear of Vacuums and Fans, can you believe that!??

Stepmom: Shes bringing my baby sister into this world, I love her alot. Shes very smart, shes a hard worker, she tries to think ahead. She uses cushions on everything she does, which takes patience. When I say use cushions, I mean that shes prepared for almost anything, I swear her car could be stolen, but she'd be ok, she'd somehow have that covered, shes very slick like that. Her main language was Spanish, but shes learned English completely just from living with us, no classes, and she speaks great. She works hard every day of her life just to make sure that they can pay the bills and get food on the table.

Few more...

Grandma: I can tell her anything, shes soo cool, and shes tall too by the way, when was the last time you saw an 85 year old woman who is 6' 2"? Thats what I thought. She does puzzles and crossword puzzles and shes a genius I swear. If you put her on Jeopardy, she'd be rich. Shes very supporting, lets you learn on your own, and doesnt judge. She uses a computer and gets less viruses then I do and shes *85*, yeah, exactly. Shes a great Grandma though, rocks a red Ford Escort like there is no tomorrow. And she cooks the best damn Meat Loaf you will ever taste!

DJ: DJ is a close friend of my family, hes been through the good and the bad, hes seen probably just about everything. Hes a very unique person. In fact, I cant think of one person in the world I could ever compare him to, but thats good, because you cant compare him. He's overcome so much, and is a really great guy. I consider him family, he works hard, he lives life, and hes happy. You might see that and go oh, thats great so what? Its actually very hard to accomplish that, but he does, and he knows how much we love him. I dont know where I'd be without him personally, hes helped me out a lot, hes a great role model and hes smart and outgoing. I dont get to see him as much as I'd like, but, just knowing he is well makes me happy, life is hard, but when you are with DJ, he makes you realize the good things in life.

Keri: My awesome Girlfriend. I've known her for almost 3 years now. Shes very beautiful, very smart, very inspiring, and kicks ass. I don't know what I'd do without her, and I don't want to know. Shes very loyal, very caring, and is always there for me. She inspires me to take the pictures I take, because I know that her beautiful eyes will see the pictures I took. Then she can see through my eyes. She is a very very important person in my life, she keeps me in line, and makes me get things done and on time. I get most of my inspiration because I want to hold her in my arms. To me, she is the most gorgeous woman in the world, I've never seen someone like her, her eyes glow to me, her lips glisten and she might as well have a Halo over her head. She has the best voice I could ever ask for, just hearing her say I love you is my energy for the day, or my good dreams for the night. We are an Army of two, we can make it through anything, and come right out the otherside, highfive and kiss eachother, laugh and walk off into the sunset.

Couple more...

Mark: Hes from my Dad's band, I pretty much grew up around my Dad's band. Mark is an amazing guy, and an amazing guitarist. Hes kind to everyone he meets, I think I've only seen him mad once. And still, he couldn't help but be kind, we all have our ups and downs, and though I do not know his personal life, I'm sure hes seen it all. Yet he walks out with a smile on his face and shakes my hand, everytime. This guy is like a brother to me, hes fun to be with, hes a great singer, bassist, and guitarist. He holds back, I can tell, because if he wanted to, I'm sure he could be famous easily, but that must not be what he wants. Whatever it is that he does want, I hope he gets it, because he earned it.

George: Awesome guy too, plays Bass in my Dad's band, guy has never ceased to amaze me. I've never seen someone play bass like him, its intense, its fat, and its got bass, but it sounds perfect. He also sings and plays Acoustic guitar sometimes, or so I've heard. Hes a legend in my eyes, the dream of what I could become as a bassist. That perfect sound, all the time, perfect notes, you can hear a song once and play the whole thing. He's known my Dad for a long time, they have been in a couple bands together. Hes my favorite bassist hands down, as is Mark my favorite Guitarist, and my Dad Skip my favorite Drummer. And no, I dont decide this because I know them, or cause they are like family or *are* family. Its because I've heard millions of songs, and theirs are different, nothing is like them playing live.

Stacy: A long lost brother of all of ours, he was in the band, and left. Great guitarist, great singer, he could shred, and hit the highest notes you could think of, and I doubt you'd want to say anything to his face about those high notes, cause he works in a steel mill, and he is HUGE. Nicest guy in the world if you are on his good side though. Havent seen him in probably near 10 years, hope hes doing well, and hope his kids and wife are too.

Work: I work in a Mental Health Facility, and I love it. Just like any job, you might wake up and think, oh man I dont want to go to work. Once I get to work though, I'm happy, I get to help the mentally ill, which is a pretty big responsibility, and takes quite a lot of mental strength. Those people deserve it more than anyone else though, the people I work with are real troopers, hard lives, bad lives, traumatizing lives, but they all get to come together now and be happy, so that makes me happy. I try not to judge, and I try to keep an open mind, because these people are true friends, and have true stories. A job like this isn't for the pay though, its for the knowledge, the wisdom, the social contact and caring for people in need.

A little bit about me

Sun Dec 13, 2009, 4:44 AM
I'm a 19 year old photographer. I've been interested in photography all my life, starting with a 4 Megapixel Pentax Optio all the way up to this 15.4 Megapixel Canon 500D. I've experimented, I've taken classes, I've been influenced and I've developed my own technique and style. I could bust open Photoshop and probably tweak things around quite nicely. One thing about me though, I like to show it how it is. I wont get rid of the dust on things, the scratches, the speckles, because its there, and always will be there, it gives it character. I am very thankful for all my watchers and anyone who has viewed or Favorited any of my photos. I started out loving Graphics Design, invested in a Wacom tablet, I love it, but I don't use it much now as for I try not to retouch my photos too much. Most of my images are almost exactly how they came out of the camera, I tweak a little bit here and there, make something black and white, focus your eyes on certain things, but only because thats my message. I have quite a small room, yet a lot of my photos and wallpapers start from here, this is my workspace, and I like to show other photographers that are just starting that you don't need a fancy camera or a bunch of money to travel around the world to take some awesome pictures.

Most of the stuff in my gallery isn't there because I want fame or fortune, most of it is there because I personally like it, it's more of my own photo album, that I share with the community to get critiques and share my likes with others. I don't have any fancy super telephoto lenses or any Ferrari's to take pictures of, although I could. I create as I am inspired to, my Ibanez wallpapers, JBL wallpapers, FX wallpaper, all of that is stuff I personally wanted to use on my computer and figured someone else would too, and I've actually found quite a bit of success with that, not the best, not the worst, but I love all of it.

I started photography by taking pictures with a Treo 650, I would apply insane Photoshop filters to it because the noise was so horrendous that I had to do something. As technology advanced, prices dropped, and my wallet got fatter, I put more into my expression through photography and my equipment. I have a nice camera and I got it so I could share better quality for those who are interested. I took classes in photography for almost 2 years in High School for 35mm, I failed that class, miserably. Not because I couldn't do my homework or take a proper picture, but through all my expression, be it playing guitar, playing bass, taking pictures, I believe its good to absorb and learn from others, but also, yourself. I like to take learn techniques, and be inspired by other people, but also add my own into the mix, whether its good or not is beyond me, I leave that up to the community to decide.

I also want to give thanks again to all my watchers, anyone who has Favorited, or anyone who has viewed anything of mine really. It supports me and helps me, any critiques are good as I don't get offended easily, this is a hobby of mine, anything that I can learn, I would love to absorb. So thank you all for your time, your support, and also, *your* great art, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that. I love seeing through other peoples eyes, seeing their perspective on things, their ups, their downs, their creativity, happiness, sadness, anger, and all emotions that they capture. I love art as much as photography, as I can draw and color, I don't really have the patience or the time sometimes. So I really appreciate all the great art everyone else turns out too, very inspiring, doesn't matter if you are a beginner or a pro, you have to start somewhere.

A note of inspiration towards people starting photography or art. Don't ever be embarrassed about your work, its YOUR work, no one else's, its unique to you and you should share it with the world if you choose to. And if you are really embarrassed, look at my older stuff in my gallery, I'm sure you will gain much confidence haha! And also remember, fame doesn't come instantly, you must build a portfolio, and you never know, you may explode overnight with success, just don't give up, and don't put your head down. It's not about money, and its not about how much money you have, or how much money your stuff cost, its about your creativity. I've seen pictures taken with phones that still amaze me to this day, not be cause of the phone, or the quality of the phone, but the creativity of the person in control. Like a good example Bert Monroy says, you got to play with it, test things out, try new things. Never stop trying, and keep putting your work out, cause who cares what they think! DeviantArt is a very nice community of people, very diverse, very interesting, and very very smart. A lot of "rules" have been set for art and photography, but remember, its not a bad thing, its there to help you at first, you can always break the rules, I've seen a lot of pictures that go against the rules, and are completely amazing.

I took Videography class for 2 years, I loved it, I would do the lights, audio, camera's, and direct all at once. I fell in love with capturing images. I also think thats why my gallery is the way it is, I get mixed up sometimes from what I've learned in videography and photography, sometimes I will apply videography rules to my photography, definitely comes out interesting. Oh and Camera Tossers, I applaud you and thank you for your work, cause I'm too damn scared to toss my own camera, but your photo's are amazing!

Thanks to everyone! :)
Special thanks to my Amazing girlfriend who inspires me everyday, and makes me keep on going with a big smile on my face ;)
